A brief biography of Luban ( 鲁班 )
Lu Ban (Chinese: 鲁班) (507–440 BC) was a famous Chinese carpenter and inventor, a legendary figure in carpentry. He was an outstanding civil engineer and craftsman in Chinese history. He was born around 507BC in the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn Period (770–426 BC). His real name was Gongshu Ban - his family name was as Gongshu, and Ban was his given name; but he was more commonly known as Lu Ban (as a citizen of the state of Lu).
Lu Ban, with hereditary skills as carpenter, was born in a renowned artisan family. Lu Ban worked in a lot of building projects with the family and received rich practical experiences since he was young. According to the book of ancient, he invented many notable tools which is still being used by carpenters today. Among them were carpenter's square (a tool used by carpenters to measure right angles), carpenter’s ink marker (a tool used by carpenters to draw straight lines), saw (to cut through material, most often wood), chisels (to cut or shape wood, stone, metal, or other hard materials) and many more. Lu Ban also created cloud ladder (a mobile counterweighted siege ladder) for the state of Chu, which could be used to attack towns fortified with tall walls, as well as grappling hooks and ram (boat implements used during on a naval warfare). Other than that, Lu Ban invented Flying Wooden Bird which is the prelude of today's airplane (a non-powered flying wooden bird which could stay in the air for three days, and was suggested to be a proto-kite), and he made a wooden horse carriage which is the earliest recorded form of an "automobile".
It is alleged that Lu Ban's wife invented the first umbrella and ban qi (nail a small piece of wood on the bench to prevent the wood from moving forward when plane wood); while his mother invented ban mu (a hook at the end of the string when using a carpenter’s ink marker).
There are many more legendary stories of Luban being well-respected and sung highly by the people. His craftwork has been circulated for thousands of years, earning him great esteem.

Lu Ban is the patron saint of Chinese builders and contractors. His wisdom in matters of carpentry is highly honoured. The inventing of these tools had freed the carpenters from primitive and burdensome work and made the work much more efficient. The carpenter work was brought into a new age. To memorize his greatness, he is called The Father of Chinese
Carpentry. The 13th day of every June of the lunar calendar is said to be master Lu Ban's birthday. It is an important festival for carpenters. Among the Chinese people, all professions related to architecture, such as carpenters, stonemasons, bricklayers, other construction industry and furniture manufacturers worship Lu Ban as the founder of their profession.
